Self-Determination Theory

Description

Self-Determination Theory

By: Richard M. Ryan, Edward L. Deci

In a previous newsletter I recommended the book “Why We Do, What We Do” by Edward Deci and Richard Flaste, which is a popular description of the science behind motivation and if you haven’t read it yet I strongly recommend it. For those who have already read it and who want to take the next step, I can recommend” Self Determination Theory” which is an exceptional description of theory behind intrinsic motivation. Prof. Edward Deci and his research colleague Prof. Richard Ryan have developed what they call “Self-determination theory” (SDT). SDT gives a framework for understanding the elements that contribute to motivation and psychological and emotional wellbeing. In the book, the authors provide a foundational description of SDT including six ”mini-theories”, empirical evidence and practical examples that can be applied throughout life. The book provides a synopsis of the research showing how we can help or hinder individuals needs for competence, belonging and autonomy in education, healthcare, sports and the workplace.
